This past weekend, UWM’s men’s soccer team headed to the dangerously swine-flu-infested territory of UW-Madison to play their part in their annual invitational. The results? A split that earned them their first win of the season, and play well against another quality opponent.
“We played against two very good opponents,” head coach Jon Coleman said. “Both teams had different styles of play so we needed to adjust our game plan and I felt the team handled things very well.”
“It is always good to get that first win for confidence.”
After the short bus-ride last weekend, the Panthers will be hoping on a plane tomorrow to take part in the Matador Challenge this weekend at the campus of Cal State Northridge, 1,700 miles from Milwaukee.
While the reputation SoCal has might be all about “surf dudes with attitude,” “good vibrations,” and “feeling mellow,” it is clear the soccer team is not out there to soak up the sun.
“It is unchartered terriority, but is a great experience for the student-athlete to explore other parts of the country and to show what UWM soccer is all about,” Coleman said.
“We will be up against some stiff competition. West Coast soccer is also a different style and we are going to have to adjust. You don’t get a lot of opportunities to play out of region so we are going to make the most of it.”
